Communication assistance in conversational situations with people with complex support needs

Zusammenfassung

In dem Beitrag werden entlang nationaler und internationaler Forschungsbefunde Herausforderungen in der Assistenz von Kindern, Jugendlichen und Erwachsenen, die aufgrund einer Beeinträchtigung mit alternativen und ergänzenden Kommunikationshilfsmitteln kom­munizieren, skizziert. Zentrale These des Beitrags ist der Gedanke, dass es sich bei Kommunikations-Assistenz entgegen dem durch die Empowerment-Bewegung etablierten Assistenzverständnis um eine hoch komplexe Tätigkeit handelt, die nicht nur eine ent­sprechende Haltung, sondern auch spezifisches fachliches und methodisches Know-How erfordert. Es wird ein Vorschlag zur Systematisierung assistierender Gesprächsstrategien vorgestellt und auf das Feld der Unterstützten Kommunikation anhand von exemplarischen Beispielen übertragen.

Abstract

The article presents national and international research findings dealing with challenges in the assistance of children, adolescents and adults who communicate with communication aids. The central thesis of the article is the idea that communication assistance, contrary to the understanding of assistance established by the empowerment movement, is a complex activity that does not only require an appropriate attitude, but also specific technical and methodical know-how. The article presents a proposal for the systematization of assistive conversation strategies and uses examples to transfer them to the field of AAC.
